What the Heck Is an Adjustable Wrench
By Beth Knott:
Some things take on the name of the brand that markets them, and that's just what happened wth the adjustable wrench.
Most people never call it by that name, but by one of the brands that's made them forever...the Crescent® wrench. No matter what you call it, this wrench packs a lot of punch and has many fabulous uses. You can find them in many, many sizes...from 4 inch on up to 16 inch, or even bigger. At almost any size, an adustable wrench (or two) is a must for any Hands On Woman toolbox. You'll find all kinds of things to tighten and loosen wth it, including, but not limited to, nuts, pipe fittings, an maybe even your spark plugs if you dive under the hood.
Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- You'll be using this tool a lot, so don't scrimp.
- The thumbwheel will open or close the jaws of the wrench. You'll get used to which way to turn it to expand or contract the jaws.
- Before you start turning this tool, make sure you have 3 points of contact. The jaws should be touching on three sides and be nice and snug against whatever you are turning.
- Keep a couple of sizes of these around. You'll get frustrated if you are trying to use a big one on a small nut or vice versa.
