HOW Takes On Fantasy Football
By: Pam Melton
Well ladies, are you ready for some football! Now I imagine that some of you Hands On Women (H.O.W.) out there are already avid fantasy participants. If you have any tips for the rest of us, send them on in. For those of you who are like me – love football, like to do anything to make watching the games on Sunday more exciting, have NO time to keep up with stats and all of that stuff, let’s develop the H.O.W. approach to Fantasy Football.
Now understand, I make no guarantees on the efficacy of my approach – I enjoy it and I’d love to hear what twists you incorporate into your strategy to boost your football enthusiasm. Between the bunch of us, we ought to be able to come up with a way to invest as little time as possible in the process, have a team that we get a kick out of that’s also at least a little competitive and have a little more fun with the people in our lives who love football. I only do pro football. I tend to get a little over-enthusiastic and I have no problem yelling my euphemisms at guys who do this for a living. I just can’t emote the same way when it’s kids.

The lure that football uses to reel me in is the fact that I like guys. Those little football pants are the best thing since perforated toilet paper. Therefore, it stands to reason that my strategy has a lot to do with the hottie factor. For example, the first year that I played, which was 2 seasons ago, I picked Jeremy Shockey as my first round pick. Everybody laughed at me for picking a tight end in the first round. I didn’t care, I think he’s hot, I think he’s talented and I WANTED HIM! During the season, he put out an average performance, nothing spectacular, but I was satisfied. All season long people approached me about trading him. In some cases, making the trade would have improved my standing in the league, but I wouldn’t give him up.
That season, we didn’t get to keep our players into the next season. Last year’s season came, I wasn’t able to attend the draft and my team was drafted for me. The co-commissioner followed standard fantasy ranking protocol and picked what the system said would be the best team under the circumstances. I lost Jeremy and the league switched to being a keeper league, so I can’t get him back. With no personal attachment to my team, it didn’t engender the same sort of enthusiasm that I experienced the year before. On top of that, I think I placed last in the league. This season, I’m on it!
Ride along with me. Let’s see how my first pass at a H.O.W. draft strategy works:
1st priority-must be a hottie
2nd priority-must appear to have some talent
3rd priority-they have to be on a team that I don’t despise.
